Letter from Elder Peacock...2/11/11

...What you're about to read is raw, heartfelt emotion from Elder Peacock in response to Utah Jazz head coach, Jerry Sloan's retirement.  Skyler is the biggest Jazz fan there is, and this is hard news for him to hear tidbits about and not be able to really react to in the way he would normally react, which to be honest, IS a good thing.  Let's just say, it's good he heard about this news while he was in the MTC, because otherwise, he might tell you all how he REALLY feels. :) ...

That makes me mad that Jerry just quit like that -- like I really want to cry, it's ridiculous.  I heard they lost like 8 games in a row or something.  But that doesn't really matter, so whatever (he is really mad...).

On a much happier note, I only have like 11 more days in the MTC and I'm so ready to get there!  All I can think about is my new companion, the mission president, all the new people I get to meet, no more english, and my first area -- I'm so pumped!  Portuguese is coming pretty good.  I have learned so much.  I'm not fluent by any means, but I'm so ready to just go do it.  Oh!  Way cool, yesterday we got our flight plans.  So cool... So we go from SLC to Denver, then to Frankfurt, Germany (so awesome) and then into Porto, Portugal.  Hahaha, I can't even explain how excited I am!  Portugal is going to be amazing!  I had an idea -- don't come pick me up at the end of my mission.  Let's go back in the summer when the weather is nice and maybe when the temple is done, or at least started. :)

But not a lot else going on with me -- same good stuff.  Oh, I met a teacher here from Turlock, CA and she knows Samuel and Trevor!  Her name is Sister Holtzclaw, that was pretty cool.  But let me know how everybody is doing.  One last thing, I'm going to need some money in my account for when I fly out, in case I have to pay some bag fee.  But I'm going to make sure everything is right before I leave, but just in case, I need money in there in case the airport people decide to be silly.
Oh yeah, and when I'm in the airport, I can call home :) so let me know what time is going to work so everyone can be there on the 22nd!

Love you,

Elder Peacock

  1. Such an awesome letter!! It's really sad about Jerry Sloan, but I think that he was tired -- physically and emotionally -- and he said himself that he didn't have the energy to continue. A lot of speculation in the media, but I prefer to take it straight "from the horse's mouth"... Deron Williams echoed that sentiment, saying that everybody can believe the media, who will spin what they want to, or they can believe him, Jerry, and the Jazz organization, as to what is true. Jerry Sloan will go down in history as one of the best coaches in basketball history, and rightly so. And to stay with the Jazz for an incredible 23 years is amazing. Comments tonight have alluded to that, and many said that it was just like Jerry to just up and quit, and it is best that he quit of his own free will and was not forced out. The Millers would never have demanded his resignation, regardless of the 8 losses. He was just out of steam; after all, he is 68 and has played and coached basketball for nearly 50 years, which is incredible all by itself.
So thrilled that you are excited about getting to Portugal and getting started. You will be awesome (you already are). Don't be frustrated if you experience Portuguese language "stupor of thought" when people over there start talking to you and you can't understand them at all (ask Uncle Rick about that--haha), it will all come back to you and you will be incredible! I love you tons!
